Alan Hanson '67
After graduating from North Central in 1967, Al attended the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1971. He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society for academic excellence in the liberal arts.
Following graduation from UW, Al enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was an honor graduate of the Defense Information School in 1971, and spent his four-year enlistment writing articles for and editing military newspapers at his duty stations in Mississippi, California, and Portugal.
After his Air Force discharge, Al returned to Spokane to begin a 30-year teaching career at North Central (1975-2005). In addition to teaching English and Social Studies classes, he was the school’s yearbook adviser for 21 years.
Following his retirement from education in 2005, Al became active in the North Central H.S. Alumni Association. He spoke about the school’s history at NC’s 100-year anniversary ceremony in 2008. The following year he became president of the alumni association, leading the group’s fundraising efforts to provide annual support for North Central student activity groups. Al also wrote and edited the association’s quarterly newsletter for nearly a decade.
In 2011, Al co-founded the association’s Educational Foundation and became president of its board of directors. Over the first seven years of its existence, the foundation raised over $160,000 to build an endowment fund to provide college scholarships for North Central graduates. By 2017, over 40 NC graduates had received financial aid from the foundation.
